Simply put, Mental Geek is a mental health community for Geeks. It serves as a community where geeks from all walks of life can share and connect with others in their mental health challanges, triumphs, and everything in between.
… after struggling to find an online Mental Health community that didn’t feel so exclusive. The geek community is made up of all sorts of people, and a lot of geeks find comfort and connection with the things they “geek out” about to help them in their mental health journey.
After some time away to focus on some personal things and life issues, 2020 has been an important time to bring Mental Geek back.
This website will serve as a blog to share stories from geeks of all walks of life. We love to share about what we have struggled with, how we have learned to cope, and also about the things we geek out about.
Geeks are geeks because we “geek” out over particular things. This community is made up of people who love comics, music, movies, books, writing, gaming, anime, sci-fi, fitness, hobbies, cosplayers, collectors, and more. You can even geek out over sports, cars, cooking, etc. Everyone has something that is important to them. It’s not only an exciting part of our lives, but it’s also important to have that outlet. So to answer the question, yes, you are probably a geek about something.
To be honest, in 2019 I started to take on too many ideas for what Mental Geek could become, and I started to neglect the very basic idea of it. I also started to experience some major burnout. Not only was I trying to take on too much, but I also had a lot going on personally and professionally. So I unfortunately had to step away, and it ended up being much longer than I expected.
So the plans for Mental Geek now are a little more focused. As I have shifted my career into web and app development, I am focusing on how I can use technology to help not only the Mental Geek community, but to help out everyone who needs it. Here are the features and plans:
There will be easier access for people to submit their stories and find access to mental health resources.
A valueable asset to our community would be to have advice from those who help people day to day that struggle with mental health issues.
Yes, this is a big project to take on, but the plan is to have user accounts on Mental Geek, so everyone can safely have their own journal. Your posts can be private or public. You can also follow other users and view their posts, and there will eventually be a chat section as well. The goal with having a social aspect for Mental Geek is to have a safer space outside of our typical social sites. Free from all the negativity that can be both a distraction and trigger for many.
The social site is still in the works. This will take a few months to finish, but in the mean time, there will be more features added to Mental Geek to make it more interactive.
-The Podcast Will Return!
Out of everything I had with Mental Geek last year, the podcast was the most popular thing, and the #1 requested thing to bring back. WHEN WILL IT BE BACK? I don’t know the answer to that. My goal in bringing it back is focusing on making less episodes, so we can have great content and more orgnized topics for each episode. Making a great show takes a lot of time to prepare and edit, and I don’t want to rush, but it is definitely in the works to bring back.
Those are the plans for Mental Geek in 2020 & beyond. The goal is simple, and that is to create a safe and welcoming community for geeks. Welcome to our community!
